Oladele Orimoogunje, a professor at the University of Nigeria (UNILAG) and the director of the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) at the institution has died.
UNILAG in a statement published on its website, disclosed that Orimoogunje died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in the early hours of Tuesday.
The statement did not disclose his cause of death, however.
In the statement, Folasade Ogunsola, the university vice-chancellor, also sent her condolences to the family of the deceased.
“The University of Lagos (UNILAG) announces the passage of Professor Ọládélé Caleb Orímóògùnjẹ́ of the Department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies (LAAS), Faculty of Arts,” the statement reads.
“Prof. Orímóògùnjẹ́ died in the early hours of Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba. He was, until his death, the Director of the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), UNILAG.
“On behalf of the entire University of Lagos community, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, commiserates with the Orímóògùnjẹ́ family and prays for the repose of the soul of Prof. Ọládélé Caleb Orímóògùnjẹ́.”
Orimoogunje was a professor of African Studies at the department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies at UNILAG.
In May, the VC approved the renewal of his appointment as ICE director.
The appointment took effect from May 1, 2023, and was expected to run until April 30, 2025.
