Tragedy on Saturday struck in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State as suspected sea pirates operating along the Bakana River took the lives of four officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Details surrounding the confrontation between NSCDC personnel and the sea pirates remain shrouded in uncertainty as of the time of filing this report.
Recent reports from waterway users in Rivers State have highlighted a concerning increase in attacks by these ruthless pirates.
These heavily armed pirates have been known for their involvement in frequent kidnappings of passengers for ransom, as well as the hijacking of goods, merchandise, and boat engines from rightful owners navigating the waterways.
The identities of the four NSCDC officers who lost their lives have yet to be officially confirmed, although there are circulating videos and photos that purportedly depict the deceased civil defence corps officers aboard a speedboat moored alongside the riverside.
A local source mentioned, as reported by PM News, that two of the deceased officers followed the Muslim faith and were accorded a fitting Islamic burial.
As of now, neither the Rivers State Command of NSCDC nor the State Police Command has issued an official response to the incident, and their respective spokespersons have remained unresponsive to inquiries seeking further information.
