Former United States President, Donald Trump is ‘safe’ after being escorted off the stage with blood on ear and cheek after shooting at Pennsylvania rally.
Secret Service says its personnel killed the suspected assailant; one spectator has been killed and two others critically injured in the shooting.
The assailant was a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.
The shots were said to have been fired from an elevated position outside the Secret Service’s security perimeter for the venue, three senior law enforcement sources said.
Witnesses on the ground described the terror and chaos unleashed by the shooting, from the initial uncertainty after hearing loud popping noises to the mass evacuation of the venue.
Trump says he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part” of his right ear. The FBI confirm an “assassination attempt” took place against the former president.
In a briefing early Sunday, the FBI said authorities were not prepared to release the identity of the shooter and had not yet found a motive in the assassination attempt.
State police have identified the person killed and two people injured, all adult males, but didn’t release names at a news briefing early Sunday.
Minutes after Trump had taken the stage, he was pointing to a chart on border crossings when at least five shots rang out.
Politicians from across the spectrum offer support to Trump, with President Joe Biden saying “there’s no place for this kind of violence” in the US.
