The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed, has voluntarily resigned his appointment to continue lecturing at the Bayero University Kano (BUK), where he was appointed from.

Professor Rasheed, who stated this to journalists on Monday in Abuja, said he had spent seven years as the Executive Secretary of the Commission.

Rasheed’s resignation announcement came after approving the issuance of a provisional license to the third Kogi State-owned University.

Presenting the letter of approval to Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, in Abuja on Monday, the Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, said the university will be the 62nd state government-owned university in the country.

Rasheed, therefore, notified the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) of the establishment of the institution.

He said, “On behalf of the Commission, with effect from 26th June, 2023, Kogi State University Kabba has been recognised as the 62 state-owned university in the country.”

He described the new university as his last baby in the Commission, having granted approvals to numerous universities in the country during his seven-year administration.

Earlier, Governor Bello said the Bill to establish the university was sent to
the Kogi House of Assembly was passed into law.

The Governor, who said there were mechanisms in place to establish the university, expressed hope that the first set of students would be admitted into the institution before his tenure expired.

He also said the establishment of the university was to satisfy the age-long desire of the people Kogi West, saying that resources had been set aside to start the university immediately.
